Firefox right click open link in new tab not working

Sometimes while browsing, I'll ctrl-click a link to open it in a new tab. How can I change this so a single left click not a right click or a clickkey opens the link in a new tab. I was having problems with Firefox Quantum not opening links in a new tab. An extension called 'Right Click Opens Link in New Tab' already allows you to do this exact same thing.

With links opening in a new tab I can see what's sitting there open beside the next tab. BTW, I did look at the extension you suggested, but it requires you to set a new preference for every website you visit. I got the Open Link in New Tab box ticked so clicking on links inside Firefox does work like I want it to. Clicking on a link results in the target url being loaded in the same tab. Right clicking on a link, opens the link in a new tab, instead of opening context menu. I couldn't see what was open behind the page.
