There are two ways to reinstall grub, automatically using grub-install, and manually through grub itself. Once it is finished, just restart your computer. Finally, I chrooted again into my working partition and ran grub-install, which reported Installation finished without errors but didn't seem to actually modify the MBR. Whether or not you install grub or lilo to the MBR is a matter of personal choice. Of course, those will only work as long as the media disks are good, and the drives still work.

How I make it, color it, bring it to consistency, and even store it.

Sometimes the manual approach is better if you have a complex setup or the first option fails. The usage is basically very simple. Grub-install is a script which calls grub underneath and in most cases it is your best solution. Viruses and other malicious software are fond of overwriting the MBR. Briefly, a boot loader is the first software program that runs when a computer starts.
